Utopians & Trio Experimental @ Niceto Club, 2/9/10
Last Thursday night, I saw my roommates' band, the Utopians, at Niceto Club in Palermo. They put on a really good show..punk/hard rock with female lead vocals in both English and castellano. They shared the bill with Trio Experimental, a very heavy trio of drums, guitar, and keyboards/synths. I have video of both, but my computer died a few weeks ago and I can't get the videos off my camera until the new one arrives..so check back in a bit and I'll get those posted.

This Is Chicago
During my last few weeks of living in Chicago, I was thinking a lot about the city and my time in it, and I came up with this list of things that are essentially Chicago to me. Today I came across it, and it seemed like a good thing to post here. So, this is Chicago:
Free summer concerts at Millennium Park
House shows
The Hyde Park Jazz Society at Room 43
Sitting on the balcony of my apartment in Logan Square with my roommate, eating pasta, drinking beer and blasting Born Ruffians
Experimental electronics, violin and bass clarinet at Heaven Gallery
Experimental jazz Tuesday nights at Rodan
Monday night kickball at Haas Park (until the police kicked us out)
Playing music with roommates and friends
Riding the L
Late night jazz shows at the Green Mill
Table tennis at Happy Village Bar
Eating at Cozy Corner
Saturday Afternoon Shows at Domestication Station

Tormenta de Santa Rosa
I recently learned that the reason it hasn't stopped raining here for a week is la Tormenta de Santa Rosa, a storm that occurs in the Southern Hemisphere around the end of August/beginning of September every year, and brings with it a lot of rain. However, it apparently also signals the end of winter, and the start of spring. So here's to better weather soon!
Well, it's been awhile since I've written anything here, so here are some things I've done between then and now:
Well, it's been awhile since I've written anything here, so here are some things I've done between then and now:
- A few weekends ago I went to the 00:30 Saturday night/Sunday morning show at Thelonious Club, one of Buenos Aires's more renowned jazz clubs, in Palermo, and saw a really dope brass band called Levas Cruzadas.
- Saw a really cool tango/fusión show at a theater called El Cubo in Abasto.
- Moved into a new apartment.
- Finished my TEFL course..I'm certified!

La Bomba de Tiempo
This is the coolest experience I've had in Argentina so far. A few nights ago, I went with a group of friends to la Bomba de Tiempo, a drum circle/percussion fest that goes on every Monday night at Ciudad Cultural Konex in Buenos Aires. It consists of around 15-20 percussionists assembled around a sort of conductor, who also has his own drum. The conductor gives some hand signals, but the musicians are largely improvising for much of the performance. I don't think this video quite captures the power or energy of the room, but it gives you an idea of what goes on. Make sure you see the real thing if you're ever in BA.

Hola Todos
Hello there,
If you’re here, I’m assuming you know who I am. For those who somehow stumbled upon this site unknowingly, I’m David. I’m originally from Boston and lived for awhile in Chicago, but at the moment I’m living in Buenos Aires, learning how to teach English. (It’s really meta, being taught how to teach.) Anyway, I decided to create this travel blog so that those who want to can keep up on what I’m doing, and maybe also as sort of an outlet for myself. I think it’s going to function mostly as a photo blog, with some words and things thrown in here and there, but I don’t know exactly. I’m also not promising regular updates. But welcome nonetheless!
